Amtrak P42 Genesis 157
The GE Genesis (officially trademarked GENESIS) is a series of passenger diesel locomotives built by GE Transportation for Amtrak, Metro-North, and Via Rail between 1992 and 2001. A total of 321 units were produced.
The GE Genesis P42DC is one of the most recognizable passenger locomotives in North America. Introduced in the early 1990s, the streamlined locomotive was designed for high-speed intercity passenger service, combining improved fuel efficiency with lower emissions and reduced operating costs compared to earlier generations of passenger power. Its distinctive sloped nose and sleek profile quickly became synonymous with modern passenger rail travel.
Powered by a 4,250-horsepower diesel engine, the P42DC is capable of speeds up to 110 mph (177 km/h) where track conditions permit. Built primarily for reliability and long-distance operation, it features head-end power (HEP) equipment that supplies electricity for passenger cars, including lighting, heating, air conditioning, and onboard amenities. This allows a single locomotive to both propel the train and provide power for the entire consist.
The P42DC became the standard locomotive for Amtrak throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, hauling famous long-distance trains such as the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, and Coast Starlight. It has also seen service in Canada with VIA Rail, where it remains an important part of the fleet. While newer locomotives are gradually taking over some duties, the P42 continues to be a dependable workhorse on many passenger routes.
